Radiation Safety Challenged Again-Research Criticized
This age-old subject continues to come up. There has been a publication to the public challenging dental radiographs and their alleged dangers. This article has stated that "Dental x-rays could end up giving you a brain tumor". Experts in oral and maxillofacial radiology have significantly criticized the research quoted in the original article. Additionally, the ADA stated relative to the research design that "...this design (remembering events from the past) can be unreliable because they are affected by what scientists call 'recall bias'. Also, the study acknowledges that some of the subjects received dental x-rays decades ago when radiation exposure was greater. Radiation rates were higher in the past due to the use of old x-ray technology and slower speed film."
According to legitimate research, a typical digital periapical radiograph requires less radiation exposure than any one of us receives for one day in our normal home or work environment.
